How to use Melatonin: Common use, Dosage & Side Effects

Melatonin is a natural hormone, made by the pea-sized pineal gland and located at the middle of your brain. Its main purpose is allow your body to know its sleep and waking times. Currently, this hormone is manufactured in laboratories as a synthetic drug.

So it is available in form of pills and other forms with which you can place under the cheek or tongue; which then allows the hormone to be absorbed right away by your body.

Common Uses of Melatonin

  • Melatonin is used for various medical conditions.
  • The drug can be used to make adjustment to the body’s internal clock.
  • It is also used for conditions such as jet lag and a change in work schedules
  • The pill is a resolution for sleep problems such as insomnia, delayed sleep phase syndrome (DSPS), and rapid eyes movement sleep behavior disorder (RBD).
  • It can also be used by patients presenting sleep disorders and with children who have autism and cerebral palsy.
  • Other candidates for this medicine include bipolar disorders high blood pressure and even hyperpigmentation.

Dosage of Melatonin

Melatonin dose for patients comes separately determined by age and the different condition of each individual.

For adults:

For blind people with sleep disorders: 0.5mg to 5mg to be take daily before bedtime.
Trouble in falling asleep: 0.3 mg to 5mg taken every day for a period of 9 months.
For people with sleep cycle disorders: 2 to 12 mg of melatonin to be taken daily for up to 4 weeks.
Insomnia caused by beta-blocker medicines can take 2.5mg of melatonin daily for up to 4 weeks. Again, a single dose of 5 mg can be used in the most severe cases.
Jet lag can be resolved by 0.5-08 mg of melatonin at bedtime. It is best taken on the day of arrival at your destination, and then to be taken for the next 2 to 5 days.

For children:

Melatonin dose for children is as follows:
1-6 mg can be taken by children having trouble falling asleep. This is taken daily before bedtime for up to one month.
Primary insomnia can be resolved by 0.05 to 0.15mg taken before bedtime for up to 4 weeks. This is also determined with the child’s body weight.

Possible Side Effects

When taken in the long term, melatonin is a safe drug. However, some of the possible side effects that have been noted include:
For patients with bleeding disorders, the drug could make the bleeding much worse.
If you have high blood pressure and taking other drugs on the side, taking melatonin could make the pressure much higher than usual.
The drug can also make the symptoms of depression worse.
The use of melatonin could raise the risk of having a seizure.
